The empire of Isstia makes certain all clan-affiliated children receive a basic education. Children learn to read, write, and do basic math, as well as the basics of history and geography. This schooling is freely available to all children of the clans, and is held at the Learning Hall located in the heart of the city. Primary schooling lasts six years, and most children begin it at the age of six and complete their education at 12. Because children are still expected to complete their chores each day as well as play, instruction takes place only for a few hours each day. The children of High Families seldom attend the Learning Halls, and instead receive their educations from private tutors. Because of this, children of High Families normally receive more in-depth instruction.

Once a child has completed their education, they are of the age where apprenticeship becomes a topic of importance. Normally a child will learn the trade of their parents, but occasionally a child will show a true talent for another vocation, in which they may seek a mentor in said field. Apprenticeships can last several years. It is just as common, especially for the children of laborers, not to continue their training. These children can often be found running wild in the streets during the days. They will normally join the labor force at the age of 16, working at the docks, shops and for local tradesmen as a strong back. This is harder work with less pay, but many laborers believe that there is no pride in a day of light work.
